Mario Guzman Jr. is an Executive Master of Public Leadership (EMPL) student whose journey is a testament to the transformative power of education and community service. His decision to pursue the EMPL program at the LBJ School was motivated by a deep-rooted passion for serving his community and a desire to enhance his leadership skills to make a meaningful impact.

Guzman’s academic and professional path is a blend of diverse experiences that have shaped his commitment to public service. With a bachelor’s degree in history from Texas State University and a master’s in educational administration from Texas A&M International University, he spent 13 years as a dedicated teacher and vice principal. In 2010, he took a bold step and started his own business, a financial and insurance agency, demonstrating his entrepreneurial spirit and commitment to innovation. His involvement in various civic organizations, including serving as the president of his local Rotary Club and Junior Achievement, reflects his dedication to community development and education.

Guzman’s experience at the LBJ School has been both challenging and transformative.

“The EMPL program has pushed me out of my comfort zone and molded me into a better version of myself to help serve my community,” Guzman said. “The coursework, projects and professors have equipped me with the skills and knowledge to analyze, communicate and prepare to tackle complex issues and drive meaningful change.”

Among the influential faculty members of the EMPL program, Guzman said Assistant Dean Trent Thurman stands out for his mentorship and support. His connection with Thurman, rooted in their shared familial ties to education, has been a source of inspiration and encouragement throughout his time at the LBJ School. Additionally, General Troy’s expertise and engaging teaching style have left a lasting impression, enriching Guzman’s understanding of leadership and public policy.

Looking ahead, Guzman envisions leveraging the skills and knowledge gained from the EMPL program to make a tangible impact in his current role as a business owner and future career endeavors. “I firmly believe in the importance of good morals and empathetic understanding of other’s backgrounds. I want to extend the opportunities I have had to the students in my hometown,” Guzman stated. He is focused on principles of ethics, integrity and honesty. He aims to instill these values in his leadership approach, whether in his business ventures or potential future roles.

Beyond his professional aspirations, Guzman remains deeply committed to community service and nonprofit work. He plans to continue his involvement with organizations like the Food Bank and Habitat for Humanity, embracing the chance to give back and uplift those in need. An educator at heart, Guzman looks forward to sharing his knowledge and experiences as a professor one day, inspiring the next generation of local leaders.

In reflecting on his EMPL journey, he expresses gratitude to his fellow cohort members for their motivation and inspiration. He said cohort nine has been a source of support and camaraderie that has enriched his learning experience and reaffirmed his belief in the power of collective leadership. Equipped with skills, knowledge and values instilled by the EMPL program, Guzman is poised to continue making a lasting difference in his community and beyond.
